Machining centers are generally divided into vertical machining centers and horizontal machining centers. The most effective machining surface of the three-axis vertical machining center is only the top surface of the workpiece. The horizontal machining center can only complete the four-sided machining of the workpiece with the rotary table. The multi-axis CNC machining center has the characteristics of high efficiency and high precision, and the workpiece can complete the machining of 5 surfaces after one clamping. If it is equipped with a high-end CNC system with 5-axis linkage, it can also process complex spatial curved surfaces with high precision, which is very suitable for forming molds for machining automotive parts, aircraft structural parts and other workpieces. According to the form of rotary axis, multi-axis CNC machining center can be divided into two settings

(1) Rotary axis of worktable.

The advantages of this kind of multi-axis CNC machining machine are: the structure of the main shaft is relatively simple, the rigidity of the main shaft is very good, and the manufacturing cost is relatively low. However, the general worktable cannot be designed too large, and the load bearing is also small, especially when the rotation angle of the A axis is ≥90 °, the workpiece will bring a large bearing torque when the workpiece is cut.

(2) The vertical spindle head rotates.

The advantage of this multi-axis CNC machining machine is that the spindle machining is very flexible, and the worktable can also be designed very large. When using a spherical milling cutter to process curved surfaces, when the center line of the tool is perpendicular to the machining surface, the surface quality of the workpiece cut by the apex will be very poor due to the linear velocity of the vertex of the spherical milling cutter. Turning an angle relative to the workpiece, the spherical milling cutter avoids the apex cutting, guarantees a certain linear speed, and can improve the surface machining quality, which is difficult for the table rotary machining center.


Multi-axis CNC machining has the following characteristics:

(1) Reduce reference conversion and improve machining accuracy.

The integration of multi-axis CNC machining not only improves the effectiveness of the process, but also because the parts need only be clamped once during the entire machining process, the machining accuracy is more easily guaranteed.

(2) Reduce the number of fixtures and floor space.

Although the price of a single device of a multi-axis CNC machining center is relatively high, due to the shortening of the process chain and the reduction of the number of equipment, the number of tooling fixtures, the floor space of the workshop and the cost of equipment maintenance are also reduced.

(3) Shorten the production process chain and simplify production management.

The complete machining of multi-axis CNC machine tools greatly shortens the production process chain, and because only the machining tasks are handed to a work position, not only simplifies production management and planning and scheduling, but also significantly improves transparency. The more complex the work piece, the more obvious its advantages over traditional production methods with dispersed processes. At the same time, due to the shortening of the production process chain, the number of work-in-progress must be reduced, which can simplify production management, thereby reducing the cost of production operations and management.

(4) Shorten the development cycle of new products.
